본 프로젝트의 건축주인 설치미술가 최정화는 아내와 함께 예술연구소를 운영하며 자신만의 예술 세계를 확장해 왔다. 그가 가장 추구하는 것은 일상과 예술의 경계를 허무는 일이다. 반면 본 설계는 주택의 본질적인 기능인 ‘휴식’에 주목하여, 집이라는 공간을 ‘일’과는 다른 흐름 속에서 재해석하였다.
이러한 두 관점을 조율하기 위해 전이공간을 마련했다. 일상의 흐름 속에서 자연스럽게 작업용 스튜디오로 이어질 수 있도록, 실내 갤러리 역할을 하는 매스를 중앙에 두어 거주 공간과 작업 공간이 직접 충돌하지 않으면서도 서로를 매개하도록 한 것이다. 이 공간은 이동 통로의 역할을 넘어, 생활 속에서 작품을 감상하고 공유할 수 있는 장으로 기능하며, 사용자가 일상과 예술 사이를 유연하게 오갈 수 있도록 돕는다.
특히 1층의 복도와 2층의 브릿지에서 각각 작품을 바라보면, 동일한 작품이라도 시선과 위치에 따라 전혀 다른 인상을 경험할 수 있다. 이는 거주자가 일상 속에서 예술을 다층적으로 체험할 수 있도록 의도한 공간적 장치이다.
The client for this project, installation artist Choi Jeong-hwa, has expanded his unique artistic world while running an art research institute with his wife. His primary pursuit is breaking down the boundaries between daily life and art. Conversely, as the designer, I believed that from the perspective of ‘rest,’ the essential function of a house, the space of a home should be interpreted within a flow distinct from ‘work.’
To reconcile these two perspectives, a transitional space was created. Placing a mass that functions as an indoor gallery at the center allows the living and working spaces to mediate each other without direct collision, while also providing a natural flow from daily life into the work studio. This space transcends its role as a mere passageway; it serves as a venue for appreciating and sharing art within daily life, helping users move flexibly between the ordinary and the artistic.
Notably, viewing the same artwork from the first-floor corridor and the second-floor bridge yields entirely different impressions depending on perspective and position. This spatial device is intentionally designed to allow residents to experience art in multiple layers within their daily lives.
